| The Music Loft at 1900 W. Markham Ave. closed Saturday. It was one of the oldest music stores in the Triangle. Customers described the store as almost like a community center for Durham musicians over the years. The store specialized in guitars, percussion instruments and sound systems. |

DURHAM -- Guitars are still hanging on the walls, drum kits are still displayed on the floor and the sheet music has yet to come off the shelves.

At Raleigh-Durham International Airport, about 114,000 travelers are expected in and out of the airport from today through Monday. On Friday, the busiest day for the holiday weekend, 30,000 fliers are expected, down from 32,000 during the same day last year, according to Mindy Hamlin, an RDU spokesperson. |

DURHAM -- A conservative anti-tax group based in Washington, D.C., and Raleigh is trying to organize opposition to Durham's proposed sales-tax surcharge on restaurant meals.

State's average SAT up 3 points
DURHAM -- The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is pleased with the state's increased SAT average released Tuesday.
The state's 2008 average is 1,007, up 3 points from last year. The increase brings it only 10 points below the national average of 1,017, which was also the national average in 2007. State Superintendant June Atkinson said she's pleased with the narrowing gap.
