DURHAM -- Fire displaced a family and left a firefighter slightly injured during a Wednesday morning blaze that heavily damaged a house at 518 N. Guthrie Ave. in East Durham, fire officials said.

Police seek break-in thief
DURHAM -- Police are trying to identify a man who broke into a vehicle and stole a purse Oct. 19 in the parking lot of the ABC store at 1930 Holloway Street. The victim's stolen bank cards have been used several times.

Historic buildings get new look thanks to residents' investments
DURHAM -- Light streams through two giant windows into a loft apartment across from the SunTrust building in downtown.
Inside, a safe dating from 1880 sits there, too heavy to move during a recent renovation, and owner Scott Donner says playfully: "It could be a wet bar maybe? That would be really great to have."

Duke cites need for expanded center
DURHAM -- Duke University Health System has filed a certificate of need with the state of North Carolina for construction of a proposed 265,000-square-foot cancer center that would expand and consolidate Duke's comprehensive outpatient cancer services and research facilities.
